Input and Output Devices
Do you have any idea of what Input/output devices are?
We use Input devices to introduce data to the Computer, and the Output devices to get information out of the Computer. Input/Output or Peripheral devices are devices that are connected to the computer, but external in relation to the processing unit. If you disconnect a peripheral device, the computer will still continue to work; but functions performed by the removed peripheral device will not be available.
Input Devices
Input devices are the hardware used to provide input to the computer to translate words, sounds, images and actions which people understand, into symbols that the system unit can process. As we discussed in the previous section, input devices are used to enter three forms of data and information and the devices include keyboards, mouse, joysticks, light pens, scanners, digital-cameras, digitizing tablets, and voice recognition devices etc.… Input devices fall under five Categories; Text input, Pointing, Gaming, Image/Video input, and Audio input.
Output Devices
In the previous section we discussed about various input devices. Now we will deal with Output devices. Output devices translate the symbols processed by the system unit into words, sounds, images, and actions that people can understand. Output is always predetermined and can be visual or auditory. Output devices include monitors, printers, and audio-output devices. Basically we can categorize them as display devices, printers and audio output devices.
